Excavator Mounted Piling Vibrators, are small pile drivers, available for hire.   These Vvibrators operate through a combination of the powerful vibrations produced by the attachment and the crowd or push-force of the excavator to which it is attached.  It is a relatively new format for an old technology, as piling using vibration has been the main means for sheet pile installation for decades.   However, this format has revolutionised the way plastic Sheet Piling and trench sheet is driven.

In general, Vibrators are much quieter than impact hammers,   In granular soils; which fluidise under the influence of the vibration, Vibrators can obtain installation speeds many times faster than impact hammers.    Piling Vibrators differ from compactor plates, as they apply a bi-directional force (up and down) to the pile.   Also, force tends to be much higher and better focused as the vibration mechanism consists of two eccentric weights that act to reinforce the vertical vibratory force (the useful stuff) and cancel out vibration that would occur laterally.   Compactor plates tend to have a single eccentric and so vibrate as much forward and backward as they do up and down.

  Piling vibrator theory

Please note that for all sheet piling applications there is a requirement for a certain amount of force to install a pile in to a specific ground type.   Small hammers, particularly hand held do hold appeal for access restricted sites, but they do have limited force and on some occasions this will not be sufficient.

APE Excavator Mounted Vibrators Minimize

Excavator mounting of piling vibrators is a relatively recent concept.   This method utilises the hydraulic of the excavator to power the vibrator and which combined with additional push-force from the excavator, enables better effectiveness of the Vibrator.

The additional excavator push-force enables the vibrator to be designed much lighter, and so for a given weight, this format of vibrator will have one of the higher force to weight ratios.

By far the most popular size is that of the EMV300.   Within the UK, this size has become the main industry workhorse.   Its light 1 tonne mass, combined with its reasonable hydraulic requirements and 30 tonne vibratory force, makes this size ideal for steel sheet piling, trench sheeting and in certain cases, plastic piling.  The high amplitude of this model 14.6mm enables the use of this small vibrator with relatively heavy mandrel designs and still benefit from powerful vibrations.  The EMV300 and MultiLock Plastic Sheet pile are fast becoming a powerful double act!

The EMV70 is growing in popularity and is perhaps the main units supplied for plastic sheet piling, particularly the budget and traditional designs.

The ICE models are more commonly associated with steel piling.   It is becoming increasing popular to remove the clamp completely and use as a powerful ramming tool.  The ICE vibrators, in general, run at a higher frequency and lower amplitude than the EMV300/EMV400 and as a result are more greatly affected by the weight of any mandrel used, but at the same time run much more smoothly and are quiet.  The ICE vibrators also are designed to permit clamp rotation and hence work very close to boundary lines.
